Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and Root Planing in Eagan, MN

If you have periodontal disease—plaque and tartar build-up on your teeth and gums—scaling and root planing are deep cleaning treatments the skilled dentists at Now Care Dental can use to bring your mouth back to good health.

Usually teeth scaling and root scaling procedures are ideal for patients who have early-stage gum disease. More advanced cases may require dental implants or even surgical procedures.

The dental scaling process

Healthy gum tissue forms a groove between the teeth and gums. If bacteria begin to build up, these pockets can deepen. If these pockets grow to more than 3 millimeters, scaling and root planing are effective therapy options to remove excess plaque that has formed on the teeth and around the gum line.

At Now Care Dental, we use an ultrasonic scaler to carefully clean the surface of your teeth—the vibration breaks down plaque. We also smooth the surface to prevent future build-up.

If an infection has set in below the gums, you may require a deep cleaning. This involves gently scaling and planing the root of the tooth below the gum line. Many patients feel no pain during the root planing procedure, but a mild anesthetic is available.

After periodontal scaling treatment

During a follow-up appointment, we’ll assess the healing process to ensure you’re on the right track. Continued daily oral hygiene is important if you’ve received a dental scaling treatment—or anyone who wants to maintain healthy teeth and gums. This includes: brushing twice a day, flossing and regular dental checkups.
