At Now Care Dental we are dedicated to the overall health of our patients and our local community. We strive to take an active approach to helping our community through dental health education along with hosting the annual Dentistry from the Heart (DFTH) and Operation You Deserve A Smile events for residents of Eagan and the surrounding Minneapolis/St. Paul communities.
Nominate an area veteran for Now Care Dental's first "Operation You Deserve A Smile" event in Eagan, MN.
This is the question staff at Now Care Dental have been asking patients and area residents as they work on "Operation You Deserve A Smile," a community geared contest that will gift one area veteran a "dental makeover" just in time for Memorial Day in May, 2017.
"It's a first time thing for us," Shelly Grimes-Gary, Dental Assistant and the Operations Manager at Now Care Dental said. "We have a lot of veterans in our office and in our community so we're pretty excited."
Treatment Coordinator, Nancy Miller agreed. The need is definitely there. "It's hard for vets that are no longer working or don't have insurance," Miller said. "We're doing this so that they can smile again."
The idea to promote "Operation You Deserve A Smile" came in part from the fact that Now Care Dental is located close to the Fort Snelling National Cemetery and owner doctor, Nicholas Geller is reminded each time he passes it the sacrifices our veterans make to serve and protect. He had his own inspiration when driving past the cemetery with hundreds of flags flying in the breeze.
In the fall of 2015, Dr. Geller and his team donated an entire day of dental services for our local uninsured community. We served more than 50 patients with services totaling over $33,000 of free extractions, fillings, and cleanings. The event was so well received that we just knew we had to hold another event. This time Dr. Geller knew that his team could provide relief for a veteran in need and that we would all enjoy building a special relationship with this person. "That is why he is offering his time and his treatment at no charge for this project," Shelly added.
Both ladies, with the help of dental assistant, Molly Martin, have been busy promoting "Operation You Deserve A Smile" on social media and have been contacting local Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and Legions to see if they know a veteran they would like to nominate.
They have had a few submissions so far, all great candidates, but are looking to gather more by early March so they can select a special veteran to receive a very generous gift.
"We're all just hoping to really give someone that smile they deserve," Martin said. "To have them leave here with a smile on their face is really important to Dr. Geller and everyone here."
To nominate a veteran, the 3 ladies encourage residents to write a letter explaining why they believe their veteran should receive a free dental makeover. They ask to please include a photograph or 2 of the veteran with the letter along with a brief description of any medical/dental considerations you think we need to know about. "Please don't forget their contact info," states the group.
Letters can be mailed, emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org or dropped off in person. Those interested in submitting can contact Now Care Dental at (651) 686-6800 if they have any questions about nominating a veteran.
By the end of March, the staff at Now Care Dental will have selected a deserving candidate for the makeover. "In my mind, I think there will be that one person that will really stick out and that really has an effect on us," Geller said. "Our group hopes to improve veterans’ appearances so they have better chances of securing employment, and also to prevent major health issues."
Please send letters and submissions to: Now Care Dental—Operation You Deserve a Smile (Attn: Shelly Grimes-Gary) 1380 Duckwood Drive, Suite 108 Eagan, MN 55123
